Lazio Strikes Out on Stengel Quote
New York Senate Debate, Sept. 13, 2000

Rick Lazio, the GOP Senate hopeful, tried to stress his New York roots during his debate with First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton. But, a New York baseball nut he's not.
While trying to encourage voters to review his accomplishments as a U.S. Representative from Long Island, Lazio struck out swinging as he tried to quote New York Yankees' and Mets' Hall of Fame Manager Casey Stengel during his closing statement:
My opponent has talked and talked, but she's done nothing for New York. I've delivered for New York. And, as that old Yankee manager, Casey Stengel, used to say, "You can check it out."
No doubt New York's diehard baseball fans were calling Lazio's campaign office to remind the Congressman that ol' Casey was fond of saying, "You can look it up."
Perhaps Lazio should have had former Texas Rangers owner George W. Bush sit in on his debate rehearsals.
Doubtful? Hey, you can look it up!
