Major General Darrel R. Porr, USAU.S. Army General Orders Troops Not to Wear Uniforms in Public

A major general in the U.S. Army has ordered the troops under his command not to wear their uniforms while in public because he has determined it is not safe for them to do so, according to a report by Newsmax.com and a recent article in the San Antonio Express-News.

The action, by Major General Darrel R. Porr, presently the Commanding General of the U.S. Army Medical Department Center and School and Fort Sam Houston in Texas, has angered veterans, service personnel and their families.

Lonnie Shoultz, whose son is in the U.S. Coast Guard and currently on assignment in the Middle East, told Newsmax.com, "I hope that my son never has to serve under a gutless officer like the one in San Antonio."

Shoultz, a Purple Heart recipient for his service in Vietnam, said Porr "has besmirched every man and woman who ever wore a uniform of the military in this country."

Brave young men and women in uniform risk their lives every day to help defend us and this country, there are 160,000 U.S. troops in Iraq right now still facing pockets of hostile fire (while wearing their uniforms!) and here is this two-star, pencil-pusher telling the troops under his command that it is not safe for them to walk on the streets of the United States of America while wearing their military service uniforms. Poppycock!

PoliticsOL.com believes that Porr is a disgrace to the very uniform that he doesn't want his soldiers to wear in public. The Senate and the House Armed Services Committees should haul him before Congress and have him explain himself in public hearings.

If you'd like to contact Maj. Gen. Darrel R. Porr and let him know what you think of his disgraceful order, you can reach him at:

  Darrel.Porr@amedd.army.mil
[The above was the general's email address published as recently as April 20, 2003 on his command's web site. If you get any email bounce backs, then we presume it is because the general has decided he'd rather not receive any emails at this time.]

The switchboard for the AMEDD Center & School is 210-221-1211. Ask to be connected to the office of the commanding general.

Contact Secretary of Defense Don Rumsfeld and let him know what you think of Porr's directive.

Contact San Antonio Mayor Ed Garza and Members of the San Antonio City Council and ask them, since a major general in the United States Army has determined that American military personnel can not safely walk the streets of their city while wearing their service uniforms, how on earth could any mere civilian possibly feel it is safe to visit there?
